Canton

The Canton Public School District's new Giant Steps program is a community and faith-based tutoring and mentoring initiative to benefit at-risk 9th and 10th grade students. Former teachers provide tutoring services and ministers and other interested community members serve as mentors. Students meet with tutors and mentors twice weekly, in 45 minute sessions, during non-academic class times (such as physical education). Giant Steps is a collaborative program that involves the school district with the Madison County District Association of Churches, Canton Mayor Fred Esco's office, Merchants & Farmers Bank, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Operation Unlock, public officials, civic leaders and more than 30 churches.
