Jackson Public Schools & Smith Elementary Celebrate College Spirit Week

Students and staff in Jackson Public Schools celebrated College Spirit Week September 29 - October 3. A variety of activities encouraged discussion about college opportunities and experiences and supported the Destination Graduation campaign. Teachers and staff throughout JPS decorated the halls and classrooms with college materials, and students and staff wore clothing advertising their favorite university.  The Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) and local colleges were invited to participate and share information with students at college fairs throughout the week.

The College Spirit observance was begun several years ago by the Ask for More Collaborative --  a partnership of schools, community organizations and families in the Lanier Feeder Pattern to increase the level of student achievement by “asking for more” from teachers, principals, students, parents and the community.

Activities at Smith Elementary

College Spirit was celebrated at Smith Elementary, starting with a red carpet rolled out for JPS Superintendent, Dr. Lonnie Edwards, Sr.  He was greeted by kindergarten and first grade students with pom poms and graduation caps, then spoke to an assembly of students.

At 10 a.m., there was a BATTLE OF THE BANDS on the west side of the campus with several JPS middle and high school bands playing spirit songs.  The student body and staff were outside to judge the bands and select the winner.

Students and staff wore and displayed college spirit clothing and items throughout the day as well as the Destination Graduation theme. College spirit banners were hung inside and outside the school.
